By Spieker Promotions EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. (May 11, 2021) – Dustin Strand opened up his 2021 campaign last Friday night at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., ending the night as the runner-up in the Late Model division. Strand started sixth in his heat race and charged all the way up to the second spot by the end of the race.
The opening night redraw placed Strand in the sixth starting spot again in the main event. Strand was one of just two drivers in the top six to run the cushion early in the race, but abandoned the line to move past Shane Edginton on the fourth lap for the third position. A caution on lap six put Strand to the inside of Joey Pederson on the double file restart. Strand held off Edginton to remain third on the restart before another yellow flag a few circuits later. Strand remained third as Edginton and Pederson swapped second and fourth respectively, before the third caution at the midway point of the 20-lapper. Strand regained the runner-up spot on the restart, while also holding off Edginton on the fourth and final restart with nine to go. Strand remained within a car length of the win for the remainder of the race, finishing as the runner-up. "It went pretty good, " Strand said postrace. "We put together a new car for this season, and it's been really crazy busy at the shop, so we just finally got it lettered about three days before the race, and it worked really well." On his climb to the front, Strand said, "we had some pretty good runs going, but it seemed like on the longer runs, I could start gaining a little, but we had a yellow every six laps or so, or right when we were catching lapped cars. I was hoping we'd get a longer green flag run and get into lapped cars, cause I could maneuver pretty good. I was searching around, trying to make the top work." Strand will return to River Cities this week with both the Late Model and the Modified for his first chance to pull 'double duty' for the 2021 season.
